Crafting the Perfect Homemade Granola: Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond Edition

I’m thrilled to share yet another one of my favorite granola recipes. Making homemade granola has become a cherished weekly ritual in my kitchen. It’s incredibly simple to prepare, offers complete control over all the ingredients, and ensures a fresh, wholesome snack free from unnecessary additives often found in store-bought varieties. This commitment to fresh, customizable ingredients is what truly sets homemade granola apart.

In my household, granola disappears quickly – whether it’s grabbed as a quick snack between meals or served as a delightful breakfast. This constant demand fuels my creativity, inspiring me to experiment with new flavor combinations every time I bake a batch. This particular iteration, Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond Granola, leans more towards a decadent snacking experience due to the inclusion of luscious dark chocolate. However, who says you can’t start your day with a little bit of dark chocolate? It certainly makes for a cheerfully indulgent breakfast, perhaps sprinkled over yogurt or enjoyed with milk.

The Inspiration Behind This Delightful Blend: A Taste of Michigan

The inspiration for this particular batch of granola struck me during a visit to Trader Joe’s. My eyes immediately landed on a bag of dried dark pitted cherries. I knew instantly that these vibrant, tart gems had to be the star of my next granola creation. Cherries have always held a special place in my heart, evoking fond memories from my childhood. Growing up in Michigan, cherry season wasn’t just a time of year; it was a grand event, a monumental celebration of nature’s bounty.

Michigan, especially the Traverse City region, is renowned for its cherries. If you ever find yourself in Traverse City, Michigan, during July, you have the incredible opportunity to attend the National Cherry Festival. Let me assure you, it’s a massive and incredibly popular event that draws visitors from all corners. You’ll discover every conceivable cherry product your heart could desire, from sweet cherry pies and jams to refreshing cherry ciders. My personal favorite, however, remains the dark chocolate-covered cherries – I can easily devour a small bag in one sitting!

Traverse City holds a special charm for me, ranking as one of my absolute favorite places to visit. Its natural beauty, vibrant food scene, and the sheer joy of the cherry festival make it an unforgettable destination. I highly recommend packing up the car and embarking on a trip to experience its splendor firsthand. Who knows, maybe you’ll even catch the cherry festival and create your own delicious memories!

And thus, from cherished childhood memories and a spontaneous grocery store find, the creation of today’s irresistible Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond Granola was born.

Why You’ll Love This Granola: Taste, Texture, and Convenience

This granola is everything you crave in a perfect snack: wonderfully tart from the cherries, delicately sweet from the chocolate and honey, and exquisitely crunchy thanks to the oats and almonds. It’s ideal for those busy days when you need a quick, energizing bite on the go. I typically prepare a large batch at the beginning of the week and store it in convenient mason jars. This way, if we’re out running errands and hunger strikes – for me or the kids – I have a wholesome, ready-to-eat snack that satisfies without compromise.

The Benefits of Going Homemade

Opting for homemade granola over store-bought alternatives offers numerous advantages. Firstly, you have complete control over the ingredients. This means you can choose organic oats, high-quality dark chocolate, and your favorite nuts and seeds, avoiding any unwanted preservatives, artificial flavors, or excessive sugars often found in commercial brands. Secondly, it’s often more cost-effective in the long run. Buying ingredients in bulk and making large batches can save you money compared to continuously purchasing smaller, pre-packaged granola. Lastly, there’s an immense satisfaction that comes from creating something delicious and healthy in your own kitchen. The aroma of freshly baked granola filling your home is an experience in itself!

Key Ingredients Spotlight: Flavor and Nutrition

  • Dark Chocolate Chips: Beyond their rich, indulgent flavor, dark chocolate (in moderation) can be a source of antioxidants. It adds a lovely depth of flavor and a touch of sweetness that perfectly complements the tart cherries.
  • Dried Dark Cherries: These provide a wonderful tartness and chewy texture. Cherries are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties and high antioxidant content, making them a delicious and healthy addition.
  • Almonds: Adding a satisfying crunch and a boost of healthy fats, protein, and fiber, almonds are fantastic for sustained energy. Their subtle nutty flavor pairs beautifully with chocolate and cherry.
  • Coconut: Whether you choose unsweetened or sweetened flakes, coconut contributes a delightful tropical aroma and a chewy texture. It’s also a good source of healthy fats.
  • Old-Fashioned Oats: The foundation of any good granola, oats are packed with fiber, particularly beta-glucan, which is known for its heart-healthy benefits. They provide the wholesome, hearty base that makes this granola so satisfying.
  • Chia Seeds: A superfood addition, chia seeds are tiny powerhouses of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. They add a subtle crunch and a nutritional punch to every bite.
  • Honey & Coconut Oil: These natural binders and sweeteners give the granola its characteristic clusters and delicious golden-brown finish, without refined sugars.

This Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond Granola is a perfectly balanced treat that’s tart, sweet, and wonderfully crunchy. It’s an ideal on-the-go snack or a delightful addition to your breakfast routine, loved by both adults and children alike. The combination of dark chocolate chips, dark dried cherries, almonds, coconut, and wholesome oats creates a harmonious blend that you’ll want to make again and again.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 3 cups oats, old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup coconut (can use unsweetened or sweetened flakes)
  • 1/2 cup whole almonds (or sliced, see notes)
  • 1/2 cup dried dark pitted cherries
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (added after baking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (150 degrees Celsius).
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, melted coconut oil, vanilla extract, and honey. Whisk these wet ingredients together until well combined. Set this mixture aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: old-fashioned oats, coconut flakes, almonds, dried cherries, and chia seeds. Mix thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  4. Pour the wet coconut oil mixture over the dry oat mixture. Stir carefully and consistently until all the oats and other dry ingredients are completely coated. This ensures even baking and flavor.
  5. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the granola mixture onto the prepared baking sheet in an even, thin layer. This promotes uniform crispiness.
  6. Bake the granola for 30 minutes. Be sure to stir the mixture every 10 minutes to prevent burning and to encourage even browning and crunch. The granola should appear golden brown and feel dry to the touch when done.
  7. Once baked, remove the granola from the oven and let it sit on the baking sheet until it has completely cooled. This cooling process is crucial for achieving that desired crunchy texture.
  8. Once cooled, stir in the dark chocolate chips. If you add them while the granola is warm, they will melt.
  9. Serve your delicious granola over yogurt with fresh fruit for a wholesome breakfast, or simply enjoy it by the handful as a satisfying snack. Store any remaining granola in airtight containers in your pantry or on your counter for up to two weeks. I find that mason jars work perfectly for storage (though in my house, it rarely lasts that long with all the granola lovers around!).

Notes

  • I typically use whole almonds for a heartier crunch, but you can easily substitute them with sliced almonds if you prefer. If using sliced almonds, consider reducing the quantity slightly, perhaps to 1/3 cup, as they are less dense.
  • For those who enjoy a more deeply toasted granola, you can extend the baking time by a few extra minutes. However, it’s crucial to keep a close eye on it to prevent burning. Granola can go from perfectly golden to burnt very quickly, so vigilance is key!
  • Feel free to experiment with other dried fruits like cranberries, raisins, or chopped apricots. Different nuts such as pecans or walnuts also make excellent substitutes for almonds.
  • If you prefer less sweetness, you can slightly reduce the amount of brown sugar or honey. Conversely, for a sweeter granola, a little extra won’t hurt!
