During a recent vacation, our family dedicated an entire day to exploring this captivating stretch of land, and it quickly became one of our favorite destinations. With its picturesque vineyards, charming local shops, cozy bed and breakfasts, antique treasures, and — of course — the truly spectacular, panoramic views of Grand Traverse Bay, Old Mission Peninsula offers an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

It’s a place where the air smells of fresh grapes and lake breeze, where every turn reveals a postcard-perfect scene, and where culinary and vinicultural excellence converge. Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Old Mission Peninsula promises a memorable adventure.

A Journey Through Traverse City’s Premier Wine Country

A significant portion of our day was joyfully dedicated to the art of “winery hopping” – and I must confess, wine holds a special place in my heart, especially when it’s as exceptional as what Traverse City has to offer! Old Mission Peninsula is renowned for its vibrant wine scene, boasting over seven distinct wineries, each with its own unique character, stunning architecture, and magnificent vistas. The quality and diversity of wines produced here are truly impressive, making it a must-visit destination for any enthusiast.

Black Star Farms: A Dual Delicacy Experience

Our vinous adventure began at Black Star Farms, a celebrated name in Michigan winemaking. Interestingly, Black Star Farms operates two incredible locations, and yes, we made sure to visit both during our trip!

Our first stop was prompted by rave reviews of their Leelanau Peninsula location, home to a restaurant called Hearth and Vine, which none other than acclaimed chef Mario Batali had enthusiastically endorsed. Upon experiencing it for ourselves, it was immediately clear why. Hearth and Vine presents itself as an unassuming, rustic café, yet it delivers an extraordinary farm-to-table dining experience. Their menu features incredibly fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, transformed into delectable dishes like house-made pickled vegetables and tender leeks. Paired with Black Star Farms’ exquisite wines, the meal was a revelation. My husband and I opted to share the vibrant caprese salad and the truly unique potato pizza. This wasn’t just any pizza; it featured Yukon potato, luxurious Leelanau cheese raclette and fromage blanc, rich roasted garlic oil, fresh arugula, and a sprinkle of black pepper.

If that description doesn’t tantalize your taste buds, I’m not sure what will! My husband, a self-proclaimed pizza connoisseur, initially harbored a degree of skepticism about a potato-based pizza. However, observing him eagerly reach for second and then third slices quickly confirmed that this pizza was every bit as remarkable as I believed it to be. It was a delightful surprise, showcasing innovative culinary artistry with humble ingredients.

Later, we visited Black Star Farms’ primary tasting room situated right on Old Mission Peninsula. This location offers a beautifully appointed tasting room where, for just $5, you can sample five of their distinguished wines. Their portfolio boasts a consistent quality across the board, but I was particularly captivated by their 2011 Pinot Noir. The winery’s description of this wine – bright cherry notes and hints of cedar on the palate, with a cocoa and light vanilla nose – was absolutely spot on. It was so incredibly good that, following a somewhat clumsy mishap (I assure you, I hadn’t consumed that much wine yet!) where I accidentally dropped our purchased bottle, we felt compelled to make a special return trip before leaving the peninsula to acquire another. Such is the allure of an truly exceptional vintage!

Peninsula Cellars: History, Charm, and Free Tastings

Our next destination was Peninsula Cellars, a truly unique winery housed within an authentically preserved 1896 historic schoolhouse. The charm of this establishment is undeniable, blending rustic history with modern winemaking. Adding to its quirky appeal, many of their wines are playfully named after school-related terms, like “Detention.” One of the most remarkable aspects of Peninsula Cellars is their generous offering of six complimentary tastings – a rarity in today’s world, and certainly a welcome surprise!

While Peninsula Cellars might not boast the opulent grandeur of some other wineries, its unpretentious atmosphere and commitment to quality shine through. They consistently offer decent wines, and their staff is notably friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable, making for a truly pleasant and educational tasting experience. It’s a wonderful stop for anyone looking for good wine in a relaxed, historic setting without breaking the bank.

Chateau Chantal: Where Wine Meets Breathtaking Vistas

Our journey then led us to Chateau Chantal, a winery that, in my estimation, merits a visit for its sheer, unparalleled views alone. Perched majestically atop a ridge, this establishment offers vistas that are nothing short of breathtaking, stretching across the vineyards and out to the shimmering waters of Grand Traverse Bay. It’s a truly iconic Michigan scene. We opted for a glass of their exquisite Chardonnay, a personal favorite, and settled outside to simply soak in this incredible panorama.

That blissful moment of tranquility, however, was charmingly interrupted just 15 minutes into our one-year-old son’s nap. Such is the reality of traveling with little ones! Yet, even those brief 15 minutes felt like an invaluable gift – a precious pause to savor the beauty of the moment and the outstanding wine.

2 Lads Winery: Modern Design and Exceptional Michigan Wines

Our final stop on the wine trail was 2 Lads Winery, a favorite of my husband’s, and for good reason. This winery stands out with its strikingly modern architecture and design, offering a refreshing contemporary aesthetic amidst the more traditional settings of the peninsula. Beyond its sleek appearance, 2 Lads also boasts another fabulous view, overlooking the vineyards and the bay, providing a perfect backdrop for tasting.

They produce some truly excellent wines, including their renowned Cabernet Franc, a varietal that has gained significant acclaim and recognition among Michigan wineries. We never leave without purchasing a bottle or two of their Cab Franc – it’s consistently superb and exemplifies the quality that Michigan winemakers are achieving.

Beyond the Vineyards: Lighthouse Views and Craft Brews

After our delightful explorations through the world of Old Mission Peninsula wines, we shifted gears and headed to the very northern tip of the peninsula to visit the iconic Mission Point Lighthouse. This historic landmark, nestled elegantly on the shores of Lake Michigan, is truly a sight to behold. Its classic charm against the vast expanse of the lake creates a stunning, serene landscape. While pictures offer a glimpse, I honestly believe they don’t fully capture the sheer beauty and tranquil atmosphere of this special place. It’s a location that truly must be experienced in person.

Even our son, Will, comfortably tucked away in his baby carrier, seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the expansive lake views and the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore. It’s a wonderful spot for a leisurely stroll and a perfect photo opportunity.

Jolly Pumpkin & Mission Table: A Culinary Conclusion

On our return journey from the lighthouse, we serendipitously discovered a captivating spot called The Jolly Pumpkin. After a full day of wine exploration, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to diversify our tasting experience and sample some craft beers. Jolly Pumpkin did not disappoint, offering a fantastic selection of unique brews, including an outstanding pale ale that truly hit the spot.

Connected to the brewery is the acclaimed Mission Table restaurant, a place I had heard exceptional things about but had not yet had the chance to try. After catching a glimpse of its beautifully designed interior, sophisticated ambiance, and an even more enticing menu, it immediately jumped to the top of our “must-try next time” list. The setting itself, with its rustic elegance and inviting atmosphere, promises an unforgettable dining experience. Just look at these inviting spaces!
