Crafting Joy: My Journey into Homemade Cocktails
Life certainly has its sweet perks, and for me, one of the best has been marrying an ex-bartender. This delightful twist means my happy hours are not just happy, but truly spectacular! After a period of embracing mocktails, I’m thrilled to once again indulge in the occasional, perfectly mixed cocktail. As the warmer months arrive, our backyard transforms into our favorite retreat. There’s nothing quite like gathering on our back porch, the grill sizzling with delicious food, a frosty mason jar of homemade sangria or margarita in hand, while watching our son, Will, joyfully run laps around the yard. It’s those simple, unadulterated moments of freedom and family that truly define summer for us. And honestly, a huge “amen” to having outdoor space where children can unleash their energy, freeing up the four walls of our cozy home!

From Waitress to Aspiring Mixologist: Learning the Art of the Perfect Drink
While my college years saw me perfecting the art of waitressing, the intricate world of bartending remained largely unexplored. My cocktail repertoire was, shall we say, rather basic – think cranberry and vodkas, or simply pouring a pre-made margarita mix from a large bottle into a glass, perhaps with a decorative lime wedge and a sprinkle of salt (no judgment, please!). However, I’m turning over a new leaf, and things are about to get a lot more exciting in my kitchen! My husband, with his extensive bartending background, has graciously agreed to give me lessons. My goal? To master the craft of mixing truly delicious drinks, perfectly suited for all the summer guests I plan on hosting.
This culinary adventure won’t be kept a secret. A few times each month, I’ll be sharing a brand new cocktail, sangria, margarita, or other exciting drink recipe that my husband has meticulously created, and that I’ve learned to confidently craft. So, make sure to stay tuned – you won’t want to miss out on these fantastic concoctions!

Whether you’re hosting a backyard BBQ, celebrating Cinco de Mayo, or simply enjoying a quiet moment on your patio, this margarita promises to deliver a delightful experience. Its vivid color and complex yet approachable flavor profile make it a crowd-pleaser that will have everyone asking for the recipe.
The Magic of Fresh Ingredients: Elevating Your Margarita
The secret to an exceptional Strawberry Mango Margarita lies in the quality and freshness of its ingredients. Using ripe, fresh strawberries and mangoes isn’t just a suggestion; it’s essential for achieving that authentic, vibrant fruit flavor that canned or frozen fruit purees simply can’t replicate. Fresh fruit not only contributes to the superior taste but also gives the margarita its beautiful, natural color. When selecting your mangoes, look for ones that are slightly soft to the touch and emit a sweet aroma. For strawberries, opt for bright red, firm berries without any soft spots. A good quality tequila also makes a significant difference; while an aged reposado can add depth, a crisp blanco tequila often lets the fruit flavors shine through more brilliantly in a fruity margarita like this. Don’t forget the fresh lime juice, which is crucial for balancing the sweetness and adding that characteristic zesty tang of a classic margarita.
While a store-bought margarita mix can be convenient, understanding the components of a good mix – typically lime juice, sweetener, and sometimes orange liqueur – can inspire you to create your own from scratch for an even fresher taste. However, for ease and consistent flavor, a quality store-bought mix works wonderfully here. The addition of strawberry schnapps enhances the strawberry notes, giving the drink an extra layer of fruity sweetness and a smooth finish. Every ingredient plays a vital role in crafting this balanced and utterly delicious tropical delight.

Strawberry Mango Margarita
Julia Jolliff
10 minutes
10 minutes
1 pitcher
Ingredients
- 1 cup tequila
- 1/2 cup strawberry schnapps
- 2 cups ice
- 2 mangoes, peeled, pit removed and sliced
- 8 oz strawberries, stems removed
- 1 cup margarita mix
- 2 Limes, juiced
- Salt, to garnish (optional)
Instructions
-
Combine the ice, tequila, strawberry schnapps, margarita mix, and fresh lime juice in a blender. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and slushy. Add the prepared mango and strawberries to the blender and blend again until the fruit is fully pureed and the drink is a uniform, smooth consistency. Pour this vibrant mixture into a large pitcher.
-
To prepare your glasses, moisten the rims with a lime wedge, then dip them into a shallow plate of salt or sugar for a beautiful and flavorful garnish. Carefully pour the Strawberry Mango Margarita into the prepared glasses.
-
Serve immediately and enjoy this wonderfully refreshing tropical treat!
Notes
- If you have a smaller blender, you may need to blend this margarita in batches to achieve a smooth consistency.
- For batch blending with a small blender: Blend the ice and liquid ingredients (tequila, schnapps, margarita mix, lime juice) first. Pour half of this liquid mixture into a separate container. Add half of the fruit (strawberries and mango) to the remaining liquid in the blender and blend until smooth. Transfer this blended fruit mixture to the pitcher. Then, pour the reserved liquid back into the blender, add the remaining fruit, and blend until smooth. Combine everything in the large pitcher and stir well to ensure an even mix.
- For an extra frosty drink, freeze your fruit beforehand.
- Adjust the amount of tequila and schnapps to your personal preference for strength and sweetness.

Serving Tips and Creative Variations
This Strawberry Mango Margarita is fantastic on its own, but a few simple touches can elevate your serving experience. A beautiful salt rim provides a classic contrast to the sweetness, but for those with a sweeter tooth, a sugar rim works equally well and complements the fruity flavors. Garnishing with fresh lime slices, whole strawberries, or a thin wedge of mango on the rim adds visual appeal and a burst of freshness with every sip. For a truly chilled experience, consider freezing some of the fruit beforehand, or even freezing small cubes of the margarita mix to prevent dilution.
Looking to customize? You can easily adjust the sweetness by adding a touch more margarita mix or a splash of simple syrup if your fruit isn’t overly sweet. For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the tequila and strawberry schnapps, and increase the margarita mix or add a splash of sparkling water or lemon-lime soda for fizz – it makes a delightful “mock-garita” for all ages! Experiment with adding a touch of heat by infusing your tequila with a few slices of jalapeño for a spicy kick, or incorporate other tropical fruits like pineapple or a hint of coconut cream for an even more exotic twist. No matter how you serve it, this Strawberry Mango Margarita is guaranteed to be a highlight of your summer.
