An Unforgettable Colorado Adventure: From Denver’s Charm to Steamboat Springs’ Majesty
We’ve just returned from an incredible week and a half exploring the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture of Colorado. If you follow my Instagram feed, you’ve already seen glimpses of our adventures in the bustling city of Denver and the serene mountain town of Steamboat Springs. This trip was a cherished return to a place that has always held a special spot in my heart, and an exciting first for my husband, Mike.

My connection to Colorado dates back to childhood, when my family would gather here every four to five years for a heartwarming reunion. During those formative years, I completely fell in love with the majestic mountains and the active, outdoorsy lifestyle that defines this state. The unparalleled natural beauty of Colorado is unlike anything I’ve encountered elsewhere in the world. It had been many years since I last attended a family reunion in the Rockies, so when the opportunity arose to join another gathering, I eagerly seized it. I am truly overjoyed that we made the decision to go, not only for the invaluable time spent reconnecting with family but also to fully immerse ourselves in the splendid outdoors. This was Mike’s inaugural visit to Colorado, and knowing his passion for hiking, biking, and rafting, I had no doubt that he would be completely captivated. As expected, he found himself utterly charmed by the sheer grandeur and endless recreational possibilities that Colorado offers.
Exploring the Mile-High City: Our Denver Adventures
Our Colorado journey began in the vibrant Denver metropolitan area. We were incredibly fortunate to have my Dad’s best friend residing near Denver, who graciously volunteered to be our personal tour guide. His local insights proved invaluable, leading us to discover not only some of Colorado’s most amazing sites but also treating us to some truly delicious home-cooked meals. Among the many culinary delights he prepared, one dish in particular stood out: a mouth-watering Columbian Steak served with an authentic Aji Sauce. Its unique flavors were so memorable that I’m already planning to share the recipe on my site very soon – it was that good!
Oh, and I absolutely must mention his prowess with a campfire! The s’mores we roasted over his carefully built fires were hands down superior to anything I’ve managed to create back home in Illinois. There’s something truly magical about gathering around a crackling fire under the expansive Colorado sky, sharing stories and indulging in sweet treats with loved ones.

Chasing Thrills: A Scenic Train Ride Through the Rockies
Among the many wonderful experiences we shared, Will’s absolute favorite activity was undoubtedly the scenic train ride through the majestic Colorado mountains. The journey offered an unparalleled perspective of the rugged terrain, winding through lush forests, past towering peaks, and alongside rushing rivers. Every turn unveiled a new vista, from hidden valleys to dramatic rock formations, creating an unforgettable experience that captivated everyone on board, especially the younger members of our group. It was a perfect blend of adventure and serene beauty, allowing us to truly appreciate the grandeur of the Rockies from a unique vantage point.

The Majestic Garden of the Gods: Where Earth Touches Sky
One of my personal highlights was visiting the extraordinary Garden of the Gods. This national natural landmark, located near Colorado Springs, is a geological marvel featuring towering sandstone rock formations that dramatically pierce the sky. As we explored, a magnificent storm began to roll in, creating a truly spectacular scene. The vibrant red rocks, illuminated against the dramatic backdrop of dark, brooding clouds, painted a picture of breathtaking beauty that felt almost otherworldly. It was a powerful reminder of nature’s artistry, showcasing intense contrasts of color and light. The sheer scale of the formations, combined with the atmospheric conditions, made for an awe-inspiring experience that left an indelible impression on all of us. Walking among these ancient giants, feeling the raw power of the landscape, was a profound and memorable part of our Colorado adventure. We spent hours wandering the paved and unpaved trails, marveling at formations like Kissing Camels, Balanced Rock, and Gateway Rock, each with its own unique character and story.

Iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre: A Must-See Landmark
Our next quick stop was at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre. As a huge music lover, I was a bit bummed that I didn’t get the chance to see a live show there – it’s definitely a long-standing item on my bucket list. However, just being able to visit this legendary venue and walk through its hallowed grounds was an incredible experience in itself. The natural acoustics and the sheer majesty of the red sandstone formations that frame the stage are truly awe-inspiring. Even without a concert, the atmosphere is palpable, resonating with the echoes of countless unforgettable performances. It’s a place where music and nature merge in a truly spectacular fashion, and I highly recommend a visit, even if it’s just for a quick walk-through to soak in the ambiance and admire the incredible geology. I vowed to return one day for the full Red Rocks concert experience.
A Mountain Brunch with a View
To cap off our Denver-area adventures, we indulged in a delightful brunch nestled high in the surrounding mountains. There is truly nothing quite like enjoying a delicious breakfast amidst such serene and majestic surroundings. The crisp, fresh mountain air invigorated our senses, while the panoramic views stretching across the peaks and valleys provided a spectacular backdrop to our meal. Every bite tasted better with the stunning scenery, and the quiet ambiance was a perfect contrast to the bustling city. It was a moment of pure tranquility and culinary pleasure, leaving us refreshed and ready for the next leg of our Colorado journey.

Journey Through the Peaks: Trail Ridge Road to Steamboat Springs
Our exploration of Colorado was just beginning as we embarked on the breathtaking drive towards Steamboat Springs. This leg of our trip led us along the iconic Trail Ridge Road, an engineering marvel that snakes through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park. This drive is absolutely worth every minute and is an experience in itself, often referred to as a “highway to the sky.” As we ascended, the scenery transformed dramatically, transitioning from dense pine forests to wide-open alpine tundras, with elevations reaching over 12,000 feet. We made frequent stops at designated pull-offs, each offering increasingly spectacular panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, and pristine alpine lakes. We even spotted some local wildlife, including marmots and elk grazing peacefully in the high meadows. The air was thin and cool, carrying the scent of pine and fresh snow, even in the summer. It’s an unparalleled opportunity to witness the raw, untamed beauty of the Rockies, providing a profound sense of scale and wonder. This drive through Rocky Mountain National Park was an unforgettable passage, setting the stage perfectly for our arrival in Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat Springs: A Summer Paradise in the Rockies
Steamboat Springs proved to be the quintessential mountain resort town, offering a delightful blend of rustic charm and abundant activities, even outside of ski season. It’s a vibrant community nestled in a picturesque valley, surrounded by stunning peaks, and it quickly became clear why it’s such a beloved destination. From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by its welcoming atmosphere and the sheer variety of things to see and do. Whether you’re an avid adventurer or simply seeking relaxation, Steamboat Springs offers something for everyone, making it a perfect family-friendly escape.
Hiking Trails and Panoramic Vistas
One of our favorite pastimes in Steamboat Springs was undoubtedly hiking. We embarked on several trails, each offering its own unique perspective of the Yampa Valley and the surrounding peaks. The trails ranged from gentle strolls perfect for families to more challenging ascents that rewarded us with breathtaking panoramic vistas. We traversed through lush aspen groves, alongside sparkling mountain streams, and up to elevated viewpoints where the world seemed to stretch out endlessly beneath us. The sheer scale and beauty of the natural environment were utterly captivating. Every turn brought a new visual treat, from vibrant wildflowers in bloom to distant snowfields clinging to the highest summits. The exertion of the climb was always worth the reward of the unparalleled views and the invigorating fresh air. These hikes weren’t just about the physical activity; they were about connecting with nature, breathing deeply, and appreciating the quiet majesty of the Colorado Rockies.

Thrill and Scenery: Alpine Slide and Gondola Rides
For those seeking a bit more exhilaration, or simply a different way to experience the mountain, the alpine slide and the gondola ride up the mountain are two absolute must-do activities in Steamboat Springs. The alpine slide offers a thrilling descent, allowing you to control your speed as you wind down a purpose-built track through scenic landscapes. It’s an adrenaline-pumping experience that’s fun for all ages, combining the excitement of a roller coaster with the beauty of the outdoors. We couldn’t stop laughing and smiling the entire way down!
Equally impressive is the scenic gondola ride. Gliding effortlessly up the mountainside, the gondola provides breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below and the distant peaks. It’s a serene and relaxing journey, offering unparalleled photo opportunities and a chance to truly appreciate the vastness of the Colorado wilderness. Once at the summit, there are usually additional trails for walking, observation decks, and even dining options, making it a perfect outing for families or anyone wanting to enjoy majestic mountain vistas without the strenuous climb. If you find yourself in Steamboat Springs, these two experiences are highly recommended for a memorable day of adventure and stunning scenery.
