While the thrill of skydiving certainly appealed, with three children awaiting our return, we opted for activities that, while exciting, felt a little less gravity-defying this time around. Interestingly, during our kayaking trip, we witnessed several groups bravely taking to the skies, and the sight was indeed exhilarating!

Culinary Immersion: A Middle Eastern Cooking Class at The Learning Kitchen
Our Butler County adventure began with an engaging Middle Eastern cooking class at The Learning Kitchen in West Chester, Ohio. As someone with Lebanese heritage on my mother’s side, the prospect of delving into the rich flavors and techniques of Middle Eastern cuisine immediately captured my excitement. This was more than just a cooking lesson; it was an opportunity to connect with my roots and deepen my appreciation for the culinary traditions I grew up loving.
What made this experience even more special was the chance to explore regional variations of familiar dishes. The Middle East boasts an incredible diversity in its culinary landscape, with recipes often differing significantly from one country or even city to another. Our instructor, hailing from Jordan, offered a unique perspective, introducing us to interpretations and ingredients that differed from my family’s Lebanese traditions. This comparative aspect added an enriching layer to the class, making every dish a discovery.

Mastering Middle Eastern Flavors: Fattoush and Pecan-Harissa Lamb Chops
The class kicked off with a recipe for fattoush, a vibrant and refreshing salad that ranks high among my favorites. If you’ve yet to experience fattoush, consider this your invitation to try it – especially during summer when fresh produce is at its peak. The version we crafted incorporated cilantro and pomegranate molasses, ingredients that offered a delightful twist to the traditional recipe I usually prepare. These subtle yet impactful additions elevated the salad, and I’m already planning to replicate this variation at home.

Following the salad, we moved on to a truly unforgettable main course: pecan-harissa crusted lamb chops served with okra and carrots. This dish was, without a doubt, one of the finest lamb preparations I have ever tasted. The combination of the nutty pecans, the spicy kick of harissa, and the perfectly cooked lamb created a symphony of flavors and textures. I am eager to recreate this masterpiece and perhaps share my own variation in the future, so keep an eye out!

The Learning Kitchen provides an exceptional environment for expanding culinary skills. Our instructor’s deep knowledge and authentic passion for Middle Eastern cuisine shone through, making the learning process both enjoyable and highly informative. If you’re seeking an interactive, flavorful, and incredibly fun way to kick off your visit to Butler County, Ohio, this cooking class is an absolute must-do. You’ll leave feeling inspired, satisfied, and with a full, happy stomach.

Sweet Indulgence: Exploring the Butler County Donut Trail
The following day, our taste buds led us to one of Butler County’s most celebrated attractions: the Donut Trail. This unique culinary adventure invites visitors to sample delectable creations from a selection of ten local bakeries scattered across the county. During our visit, we happily indulged in offerings from three of these esteemed establishments: Mimi’s Donuts & Bakery, Kelly’s Bakery, and Jupiter Coffee & Donuts. For any donut aficionado, this trail is an essential addition to your travel itinerary.

The Donut Trail is more than just a food tour; it’s an immersive experience into the heart of local bakeries, each offering its own signature touch. We truly ate our way through a glorious morning, savoring every sweet bite. From timeless glazed classics to innovative and unique flavors like the irresistible Oreo donut, the variety was simply fantastic. Each stop provided not just a treat for the palate but also a glimpse into the local community and its vibrant culinary scene. This trail is a testament to Butler County’s knack for turning simple pleasures into memorable attractions.

Outdoor Adventure: Kayaking the Great Miami River
After our delightful donut feast, we sought an activity to balance the indulgence, leading us to Jimco’s Riverside Pizza & Kayaking in Middletown, Ohio. As avid lovers of kayaking and the great outdoors, this was a perfect choice for us. The Great Miami River offered a serene yet engaging backdrop for our paddle, providing an ideal way to burn off those delicious donuts.

The river was mostly calm, making for a relaxing paddle, but it also presented a few gentle rapids that added a touch of excitement without being intimidating. This balance made it suitable for various skill levels, offering both tranquil stretches for soaking in nature and moments of gentle challenge. The natural beauty surrounding the river was captivating, providing picturesque views and a refreshing escape from daily life. For those who might work up an appetite after their river excursion, Jimco’s is also known for serving some of the best pizza in the area – a perfect reward after an active day.

A Global Culinary Journey: Exploring Jungle Jim’s International Market
Later that day, we embarked on an extraordinary journey to Jungle Jim’s International Market, an unparalleled international food market that transcends the typical grocery store experience. Calling it a supermarket simply doesn’t do it justice; Jungle Jim’s is a true destination, an immersive adventure for the senses, and a culinary wonderland that needs to be seen to be believed. We joined a store tour, eager to uncover its countless treasures.

With over 200,000 square feet of shopping space in each of its locations, Jungle Jim’s boasts an astonishing inventory of more than 180,000 products sourced from around the globe. Upon entering, the sheer scale and variety were overwhelming in the best possible way. Beyond groceries, the market houses one of the largest wine and beer selections we’ve ever encountered, along with an incredible array of specialty departments. Visitors can participate in guided store tours, attend food demonstrations, and enjoy various events almost any day of the week, making it a dynamic hub of activity.

We were particularly captivated by the extensive hot sauce aisle, a colorful labyrinth of heat and flavor from every corner of the world. The exotic fruits and vegetable section was equally impressive, displaying rare produce that you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. As a seafood enthusiast, I was thrilled to discover that Jungle Jim’s offers some of the freshest seafood in the entire region. This market is an absolute must-visit for anyone in Butler County, whether you’re a serious chef, a curious food explorer, or simply looking for an unforgettable shopping experience.

Weekends at Jungle Jim’s are especially vibrant, with numerous samples available, encouraging visitors to try unique foods that might otherwise go unnoticed. If you’re searching for a specific, hard-to-find ingredient, Jungle Jim’s is almost guaranteed to have it. It’s more than just a place to buy groceries; it’s an education in global cuisine, a sensory overload in the best possible way, and a place where culinary dreams come true.

Art in Nature: Exploring Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park
Our journey through Butler County continued with a visit to Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park in Hamilton, Ohio. For anyone who appreciates the harmonious blend of art and the natural world, this destination is nothing short of magical. Pyramid Hill offers a unique opportunity to experience monumental sculptures set against a breathtaking backdrop of rolling hills, verdant meadows, tranquil lakes, and winding hiking trails.
Spanning over 300 acres, this expansive outdoor museum is home to more than 60 monumental sculptures. To truly immerse ourselves in the experience and cover the vast grounds efficiently, we opted to rent an “art cart” – essentially a golf cart designed for navigating the park’s scenic routes. This provided a fun and convenient way to explore the diverse collection of artworks, each thoughtfully placed to interact with its natural surroundings.

In addition to its impressive outdoor collection, Pyramid Hill features an Ancient Sculpture Museum, which houses a fascinating array of Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Syrian, and Egyptian sculptures dating as far back as 1550 B.C. The Museum Gallery also regularly hosts exhibitions by local, regional, and national artists, ensuring there’s always something new to discover. What makes Pyramid Hill truly unique is its distinction as the only museum where you can tour the grounds in an “Art Cart,” offering an accessible and enjoyable way for over 30,000 annual visitors to explore. It proudly stands as the largest cultural tourist attraction in Butler County, a testament to its compelling combination of art, nature, and innovation.

Farm-to-Table Experience: Berry Picking at Indian Springs Berry Farm
Our final adventure in Butler County brought us to Indian Springs Berry Farm, an organic blackberry farm where we had the pleasure of picking fresh berries and speaking with owner Jason about his farming operations. This experience resonated deeply with me, reminding me of cherished childhood memories of berry picking in Michigan. Finding such a wonderful place to share this activity with my own children is always a joy.

Indian Springs Berry Farm is an absolute gem for anyone visiting or residing in the Butler County area. The blackberries here are not only organic but also among the most delicious I’ve ever tasted. Learning about the incredible care and dedication Jason pours into cultivating these beautiful berries was truly inspiring. The farm itself holds a special significance, as it’s the very property where Jason grew up. His mother still resides there, and the thriving berry farm is nestled right in her backyard, a testament to family legacy and a passion for sustainable agriculture.

The blackberry crop, planted just two years prior, was in its first full season of public picking during our visit, offering an abundance of sweet, juicy fruit. This activity isn’t just a delightful pastime for adults; it’s a fantastic educational experience for children. Teaching kids where their food comes from, allowing them to participate in the harvest, and connecting them with nature is incredibly valuable. My own children adore berry picking, and it’s an experience that fosters appreciation for fresh produce and the hard work behind it.
