Why This Honey Garlic Chicken is Healthier and Better

Many traditional honey garlic chicken recipes call for deep frying, which, while delicious, adds significant fat and calories. Our version champions a healthier approach by pan-frying the chicken to achieve that desirable golden crispness without submerging it in oil. This method not only reduces the fat content but also makes cleanup a breeze. We also focus on simple, wholesome ingredients you likely already have in your pantry, ensuring a fresh and flavorful meal every time. By making your favorite takeout dishes at home, you gain complete control over the quality of ingredients, sodium levels, and overall nutritional value, proving that “healthier” doesn’t mean “less delicious.”

The Essential Ingredients for Your Healthy Honey Garlic Chicken

One of the most appealing aspects of this healthier honey garlic chicken recipe is its straightforward ingredient list. You won’t need to hunt for obscure items; everything required is a pantry staple or readily available at any grocery store. Despite the simplicity, each ingredient plays a crucial role in building the incredible depth of flavor that makes this dish so popular. It’s this thoughtful combination that transforms a few basic items into an extraordinary meal.

  • Chicken Thighs: We opt for chicken thighs for a reason! Unlike leaner chicken breasts, thighs are far more forgiving and less prone to drying out. Their natural fat content keeps them juicy and tender, even if you slightly overcook them, guaranteeing a consistently delicious outcome. Plus, they offer a richer flavor that pairs beautifully with the sweet and savory sauce. Cut into bite-sized pieces, they cook quickly and evenly, ensuring every piece gets coated in that irresistible glaze.
  • Cornstarch: This unassuming ingredient is the secret weapon for both achieving a crispy exterior and perfectly thickening the sauce. Coating the chicken pieces in cornstarch creates a delicate crust when pan-fried, helping them brown beautifully without deep frying. Furthermore, it helps the chicken retain its moisture, resulting in incredibly tender bites. When added to the sauce, cornstarch creates that signature glossy, sticky texture that clings perfectly to every piece of chicken.
  • The Quick, 4-Ingredient Honey Garlic Sauce for Chicken: This is where the magic truly happens! Our sauce is a harmonious blend of four pantry powerhouses:
    • Soy Sauce: Provides the essential umami and savory depth that is characteristic of Asian-inspired dishes.
    • Chicken Broth: Adds a foundational liquid base and rich chicken flavor, ensuring the sauce is well-rounded.
    • Honey: Contributes natural sweetness and helps create that desirable glossy, sticky glaze. It balances the saltiness of the soy sauce perfectly.
    • Garlic: The aromatic heart of the sauce, providing a pungent, savory kick that ties all the flavors together.

A crucial tip for the sauce: Be sure to use regular soy sauce and chicken broth, not low-sodium versions. The full-sodium varieties are essential for proper seasoning and depth of flavor. If low-sodium is all you have on hand, don’t worry – simply mix about 3/4 teaspoon of kosher salt with the cornstarch before tossing the chicken to compensate for the reduced salt in the liquids.

  • Avocado Oil (or other high smoke point oil): Essential for pan-frying the chicken to a beautiful golden brown without burning. Avocado oil is a great choice due to its neutral flavor and high smoke point.
  • Green Onions: A fresh and vibrant garnish that adds a touch of oniony flavor and a pop of color, completing the dish.

How to Master One-Pan Honey Garlic Sauce Chicken

Our method for making honey garlic chicken is designed to lighten not only the dish itself but also your workload in the kitchen. By skipping the deep-fryer and consolidating all the cooking into a single pan, we drastically cut down on effort and cleanup. Despite the simplified process, the resulting flavor is absolutely phenomenal – complex, balanced, and utterly satisfying. Let’s walk through the easy steps to achieve this culinary triumph:

  • Prepare and Brown the Chicken: Start by tossing your bite-sized chicken pieces with cornstarch and a touch of salt until each piece is evenly coated. This step is key for moisture retention and achieving a beautiful crust. Heat your chosen high smoke point oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Carefully add the chicken in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook the chicken undisturbed for several minutes until it develops a deep golden-brown crust on the bottom. This browning is essential for flavor development. Flip the chicken and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side. Don’t worry about cooking it through completely at this stage; it will finish cooking in the sauce.
  • Sauté the Garlic for Maximum Flavor: While the chicken is browning, you can whisk together your honey, chicken broth, and soy sauce in a small bowl and set it aside. Once the chicken is partially browned, push it to one side of the skillet, creating an empty space. Add the minced garlic to this empty section and cook it for about 1-2 minutes until it becomes fragrant and slightly softened. Cooking the garlic directly on the hot pan ensures it has ample contact with the heat, allowing its flavor to mellow and sweeten without burning, which is crucial for the sauce’s overall taste profile. If you simply stir it in with the chicken, it might not cook evenly, leaving some raw garlic flavor.
  • Create the Perfect Glossy Sauce: Now for the transformation! Pour the whisked honey-broth-soy sauce mixture directly into the pan with the chicken and garlic. Initially, the sauce will appear quite thin, and you might wonder if it’s going to thicken at all – this is a normal “awkward stage”! But be patient. As the liquid heats and simmers, the cornstarch that coated the chicken will begin to dissolve into the sauce, working its magic to thicken it. Stir gently to ensure everything is well combined. Within just a few minutes of simmering, you’ll witness the sauce transform into a beautiful, glossy, shiny, and wonderfully sticky glaze that perfectly coats every piece of chicken. Continue simmering until the sauce reaches your desired thickness and the chicken is cooked through to an internal temperature of 165ºF (74ºC).
  • Finish and Serve: Once the chicken is perfectly cooked and coated in that delectable sauce, remove it from the heat. Garnish generously with sliced green onions for a fresh crunch and vibrant color. Serve immediately with your favorite sides.

Pro-Tip for Extra Crispy Chicken: If you have a few extra minutes and don’t mind washing an additional plate, you can transfer the browned chicken to a plate before you add the garlic to the pan. Let the sauce reduce and thicken on its own (after cooking the garlic) until it reaches your desired consistency. Then, return the chicken to the pan and toss it to coat thoroughly. This method preserves the chicken’s crispy crust a little more effectively, offering a delightful textural contrast. It’s a “choose your own adventure” option based on how much time and effort you want to put in!

Healthier Honey Garlic Chicken

By: Jennifer Pallian BSc, RD
This healthier Honey Garlic Chicken is a no deep-fry recipe. Tender bites of juicy, golden chicken with a sticky, savoury sauce. SO GOOD!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken thighs cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch
  • tsp kosher salt
  • 3 tbsp avocado oil or other high smoke point oil
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • cup chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 green onions sliced

Instructions

  1. Toss chicken pieces with cornstarch and salt to evenly coat. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering hot. Add chicken in a single layer and cook, undisturbed, until deeply golden on the bottom. Flip and cook another 2 minutes (don’t worry about cooking it through yet).
  2. Meanwhile, whisk together honey, chicken broth, and soy sauce and set aside.
  3. Push chicken to one side of the skillet. Cook minced garlic in the empty part of the skillet until soft and fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Add the honey mixture to the pan and stir it through the chicken to coat. Let it come to a simmer and thicken for 2-3 minutes more, stirring occasionally. The sauce will become glossy and sticky. Ensure chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF (74ºC). Top with sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For the soy sauce and broth, be sure to use regular and not low-sodium versions for the best flavor. Low-sodium varieties will result in a slightly bland dish. If low-sodium is what you have on hand, mix 3/4 tsp of kosher salt with the cornstarch before tossing the chicken to enhance seasoning.
  • To achieve an even crispier crust on your chicken, you can transfer the browned chicken pieces to a plate before adding the garlic to the pan. Prepare and thicken the sauce on its own (after cooking the garlic), letting it reduce to your desired consistency. Then, return the chicken to the pan and toss to coat. This method maintains more of the chicken’s crispiness, though it does mean one extra plate to wash!
