The Ultimate Stone Fruit Sangria & Summer Cheeseboard Guide
Summer is synonymous with vibrant flavors, leisurely gatherings, and refreshing drinks. Among the many delights of the season, a well-crafted sangria paired with an artfully arranged cheeseboard stands out as the epitome of effortless entertaining. This guide not only shares my absolute favorite stone fruit sangria recipe – a drink I eagerly prepare every year as soon as peak seasonal fruits arrive – but also offers invaluable tips for creating a beautiful, summery cheeseboard that perfectly complements it.
Crafting the Perfect Stone Fruit Sangria for Summer Bliss
My sangria recipe is a true summer staple, designed to adapt with the changing seasons while always delivering a delicious, juicy experience. The beauty of this recipe lies in its flexibility. In June, when local produce bursts forth, I make it with succulent strawberries and hydrating watermelon. As July and August roll in, the star fruits often shift to luscious nectarines, sweet peaches, or delicate apricots, taking full advantage of their peak ripeness. Even in December, the recipe transforms into a festive citrus sangria, proving its versatility year-round. The key is simply to maintain the fruit-to-other-ingredient ratio, ensuring every batch is scrumptiously balanced.
Seasonal Variations for Year-Round Enjoyment
While stone fruits are a summer dream, don’t limit your sangria creativity. Experiment with different fruits throughout the year:
- Spring: Incorporate berries like raspberries and blueberries, along with rhubarb (cooked and sweetened).
- Autumn: Apples, pears, and cranberries can add a wonderful autumnal twist.
- Winter: As mentioned, citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits create a bright and zesty winter sangria.
No matter the season, the goal is to use ripe, flavorful fruit that will infuse the wine and brandy with its natural sweetness and aroma. This adaptability makes it an ideal go-to recipe for any celebration.
Tips for the Best Sangria Flavor
For a sangria that truly sings, planning ahead is crucial. The magic happens when the sugar has ample time to dissolve completely, and the fruit flavors fully meld with the wine and brandy. This allows for a deeper, more harmonious taste profile. While it’s still perfectly enjoyable if you prepare it in the afternoon for an evening event, letting it chill overnight truly unlocks its fullest potential, transforming it into an exquisite concoction. Serve it well-chilled in elegant wine glasses, perhaps with a fresh fruit garnish, for an inviting presentation.
Elevating Your Summer Gathering with a Gourmet Cheeseboard
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of serving this very sangria for my husband’s birthday, and it was a smash hit. To elevate the celebration, I partnered with Castello Cheese to curate a truly beautiful summery cheeseboard, and I’m thrilled to share my favorite tips for pairing them perfectly. The combination was an absolute delight, proving that a thoughtful cheeseboard can transform any gathering into an unforgettable culinary experience.

Curating a World of Flavors: Selecting Your Cheeses
The foundation of any great cheeseboard lies in a diverse selection of cheeses. I began with Castello’s Extra-Creamy Danish Blue, a consistently excellent choice for platters due to its rich, velvety texture and distinctive tang. Next, I added their sweet and nutty Tickler Extra-Mature Cheddar, which has quickly become a cherished family favorite for its complex, crumbly character. To round out the selection, a generous wedge of creamy, buttery Brie offered a soft, delicate contrast, while some tangy Castello Aged Havarti brought a delightful sharpness and a slightly granular texture. This thoughtful combination ensures a perfect range of flavors and textures, catering to every palate.
When selecting your cheeses, aim for variety: a mix of soft and hard, mild and bold, creamy and crumbly. Think about contrasting milk types (cow, goat, sheep) and aging processes to offer a truly dynamic experience.
Complementary Bites: Crackers, Fruits, and Spreads
Once your cheeses are thoughtfully arranged, the next step is the artistic part: filling in all the remaining space on the board. This is where you can truly let your creativity shine, layering in textures and colors to create an abundant and inviting display. I recommend a diverse assortment of crackers in different shapes and sizes – from crisp and delicate to hearty and robust. Pair these with an array of sun-soaked seasonal and/or tropical fruits, and don’t forget something delicious for spreading.
Here, I utilized a selection of small crostini crackers, delicate round wafer crackers, and buttery breadstick crackers to add visual interest and textural crunch.
For the fruit, I gravitated towards the juicy strawberries and sweet cherries I found at the local market, their vibrant colors adding a pop to the board. I also added some beautifully exotic passionfruit, primarily for its striking appearance and delectable texture. While its puckersome seeds offer a surprisingly delicious counterpoint to the rich cheddar, I mostly used it as an eye-catching garnish. Beyond these, consider grapes, melon slices, or even dried fruits like figs and apricots for a varied fruit selection.
To accompany the cheeses and crackers, I nestled in a small bowl of convenient store-bought fig jam. However, if you prefer a homemade touch, you can easily whip up your own 10-minute any-fruit chia jam – a quick and healthy option that allows you to customize flavors.
Mastering the Art of Cheeseboard Presentation

When it comes to styling a cheeseboard, think in layers and create a sense of organic abundance. Start by placing your cheeses, then fill in the larger gaps with crackers and bigger fruits. Don’t be afraid to stack and overlap; this creates visual depth and makes the board feel lush. For instance, pop a few smaller berries or sliced grapes on top of the cheese wedges. Slice some of the fruits in half – like plums or apricots – to showcase their beautiful cross-sections and vibrant colors. Tuck a few breadsticks strategically around the cheese, adding height and an architectural element. A sprinkle of cracker crumbs or fresh herbs (like rosemary sprigs) around the board can add a touch of rustic charm and freshness.
A crucial tip for making your cheeseboard inviting is to “break into” the cheese before guests arrive. Slice a few pieces off the harder cheeses and place them on top of their respective wedges, or cut a initial wedge from the brie. This simple act makes the board look approachable and encourages people to dig right in, dispelling any shyness about being the first to cut. Finally, leverage small dishes or ramekins to help fill any remaining space on the board. These can hold jams, olives, nuts, or honey, and contribute to the impression of a truly bountiful feast. Pile everything on generously to give that irresistible feeling of abundance and luxury.
The Recipe: Exquisite Stone Fruit Sangria

Stone Fruit Sangria
By: Jennifer Pallian BSc, RD
A juicy, delicious, and incredibly summery sangria recipe featuring ripe peaches, plums, and/or cherries, beautifully combined with red wine and a touch of brandy.
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 12 ounces (about 4 ripe) plums, pitted and sliced
- 12 ounces cherries (red or Rainier), pitted and halved
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup brandy
- 1 bottle red wine (choose something you enjoy drinking, but nothing too extravagant)
Instructions
- Combine the sliced plums, halved cherries, and granulated sugar in a large pitcher, stirring gently to ensure the fruit is well coated and the sugar begins to dissolve.
- Pour in the brandy and the entire bottle of red wine, stirring everything together once more to combine thoroughly.
- Cover the top of the pitcher tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate the sangria for a minimum of 4 hours. For the best possible flavor, allowing it to meld overnight is highly recommended, as this gives the sugar ample time to dissolve fully and allows the fruit flavors to deeply infuse the liquid.
- Serve the sangria chilled in elegant wine glasses. This refreshing drink will keep well in the refrigerator for approximately 3 days, making it perfect for advanced preparation or enjoying over a few days.
The Perfect Pair: Sangria and Cheeseboard Synergy

The synergy between a vibrant stone fruit sangria and a thoughtfully assembled cheeseboard is truly remarkable. The sweet and fruity notes of the sangria beautifully cut through the richness of the cheeses, while the variety of textures and flavors on the cheeseboard provides a delightful contrast to the drink. For instance, the tang of the Castello Danish Blue finds a wonderful partner in the sangria’s fruity sweetness, creating a harmonious balance. Similarly, the nutty Tickler Cheddar or the creamy Brie can be enjoyed with a sip of the refreshing sangria, enhancing both experiences. This pairing elevates simple summer fare into a sophisticated yet relaxed feast, perfect for any casual gathering or special occasion.
