Tamarindo, Costa Rica: An Unforgettable Journey to Surfing Paradise & Pura Vida
Nestled along the sun-drenched Northern Pacific Coast, Tamarindo, Costa Rica, beckons travelers with its irresistible charm. This captivating beach town is a vibrant tapestry of experiences, renowned globally for its exceptional surfing waves, exquisite culinary scene, breathtaking sunsets that paint the sky in fiery hues, and an effortlessly laid-back way of life encapsulated by the local philosophy of “Pura Vida.” It’s a place where time slows down, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the natural beauty and warm hospitality, not to mention some of the world’s most spectacular beaches. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or simply seeking a serene escape, Tamarindo promises an unforgettable tropical adventure.

A Cherished Return: Rediscovering Costa Rica’s Coastal Jewel
For me, Costa Rica holds a profoundly special place in my heart, a love affair that began over a decade ago. Twelve years prior, during my college studies abroad, I first encountered the enchanting allure of this Central American gem. My initial journey started in a quaint town just outside of San Jose, where I had the privilege of living with a wonderful Costa Rican family. This immersive experience allowed me to truly understand the spirit of Pura Vida – a simple yet profound way of life that celebrates happiness, well-being, and a deep connection to nature and community. It taught me to embrace life’s simple pleasures and appreciate the present moment.
During that foundational study abroad period, nearly every weekend was an opportunity for exploration. What struck me then, and remains true today, is Costa Rica’s remarkable accessibility. The country is compact enough that you can traverse much of its diverse landscape – from bustling cities to misty cloud forests and pristine coastlines – in half a day or less. The only exceptions are those truly remote beaches, often the most pristine and beautiful, that require navigating unpaved, adventurous roads. And if time permits, these off-the-beaten-path detours are always, in my opinion, immensely rewarding, leading to hidden paradises untouched by mass tourism.

Among the many stunning destinations my friends and I explored back then, Tamarindo stood out as a clear favorite. I carried countless fond memories of its vibrant energy and breathtaking scenery. Predominantly known for its fantastic surfing conditions and idyllic beaches, it’s a place that calls to both seasoned wave riders and those, like my husband Mike and I, who simply enjoy the sheer joy of attempting to surf. We’ve taken lessons and rented boards at various beach spots around the world, and while our skills are still very much a work in progress, the enthusiasm remains undimmed. On this recent five-day trip with Mike, I found immense pleasure in simply watching the incredible talent of the surfers who flock to Tamarindo’s shores, living vicariously through their graceful rides as they carved through the Pacific waves.
Tamarindo Through the Years: Evolution of a Beloved Beach Town
Returning to Tamarindo after twelve years was an experience filled with both nostalgia and surprise. The town has certainly evolved structurally, reflecting its burgeoning popularity as a premier travel destination. The Tamarindo I remembered was characterized by dusty dirt roads and charming, rustic beach bars where locals and travelers mingled freely. Today, it boasts paved streets, an abundance of diverse international and local restaurants, stylish boutiques, and a plethora of shopping opportunities. This modernization speaks to the growth and development the area has experienced.
However, despite these undeniable changes, I was relieved and delighted to discover that the fundamental elements that drew me to Tamarindo initially remained wonderfully untouched. The glorious stretches of beach still invited long strolls and sunbathing, the fresh, flavorful food tasted as vibrant as ever, the sunsets continued to cast their magical spell across the horizon, and the quintessential laid-back way of life persisted. The heart and soul of Tamarindo were right where I had left them, inviting us to embrace its timeless appeal and comforting familiarity amidst its new veneer.

Our Cozy Retreat: Staying at 15 Love Bed & Breakfast
For our stay, Mike and I chose the delightful 15 Love Bed & Breakfast, a charming and welcoming establishment conveniently located as you enter the town of Tamarindo. It’s nestled near the renowned Witches Rock Surf Camp, a landmark that was, remarkably, already a fixture during my first visit over a decade ago. This familiarity added another layer of comfort and connection to our trip, feeling like a nod to the past while enjoying the present.
We strategically visited Costa Rica at the beginning of May, which marks the onset of the country’s “green season,” often referred to as the rainy season. However, this timing proved to be exceptionally advantageous, offering a unique set of benefits. The crowds, which can be considerable during the peak dry season, had significantly thinned out. This meant more serene beach experiences, easier access to popular restaurants, and a more relaxed atmosphere for all activities. Moreover, prices for accommodation and excursions tend to be more favorable during this period, offering better value for your travel budget. And as for the rain? It rarely lasted more than an hour at most, often arriving as a refreshing afternoon shower that quickly passed, leaving behind a crisp, clean atmosphere and vibrant, lush landscapes.

In fact, these brief tropical storms often create truly spectacular photo opportunities, especially when viewed from a cozy happy hour spot. There’s nothing quite like sipping a cold Imperial beer, Costa Rica’s popular lager, and watching the dramatic storm clouds roll in over the Pacific, transforming the sky into a masterpiece of light and shadow, followed by the refreshing coolness that settles over the air.

A Culinary Journey: Savoring Tamarindo’s Fresh Flavors
Our mornings at 15 Love Bed & Breakfast were a highlight, a true celebration of Costa Rican freshness and hospitality. As many who follow my Instagram might have seen, the breakfasts served daily were nothing short of heavenly. I developed a particular obsession with the abundance of fresh, ripe mango, the sweet tang of perfectly cut pineapple, and especially the invigorating, freshly squeezed papaya juice. Each morning was a burst of tropical flavors, a perfect and nutritious start to our adventurous days, energizing us for whatever lay ahead. (For those eager to recreate a taste of Costa Rica at home, stay tuned for an upcoming smoothie recipe directly inspired by our unforgettable trip!)

Exploring Pristine Shores: Beyond Tamarindo Beach
With five blissful days entirely to ourselves – yes, five whole days without the kids, a feat we’re still not quite sure how we pulled off – Mike and I indulged in ample relaxation at the beach. While Tamarindo Beach itself is stunning and offers vibrant energy with its surf schools and beachfront activities, we ventured out to discover other coastal treasures in the region. One of our absolute favorites was Playa Conchal, a truly unique gem approximately 30 minutes north of Tamarindo. This beach is distinguished by its ‘sand’ which is actually composed of millions of tiny, perfectly crushed seashells. This gives the entire shoreline a dazzling white, almost iridescent appearance, contrasting beautifully with the bright, almost unbelievable teal color of the water. It was, quite simply, my kind of beach paradise – perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and simply marveling at its natural artistry.
A Quick Tip for Playa Conchal: Be aware that reaching Playa Conchal often requires driving along another stretch of beach or navigating some unpaved sections to access it. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for this type of terrain, as it can be a bit rugged in places. However, the reward of experiencing such a pristine and unique beach is absolutely worth the adventurous journey.

And while you’re enjoying the unparalleled beauty of Playa Conchal, there’s no better way to stay refreshed and hydrated than with a fresh coconut straight from the source. You’ll often find local vendors offering them, expertly cracked open right before your eyes. Who needs store-bought coconut water when you can enjoy the real, unprocessed deal? Pure, natural refreshment at its finest, a true taste of the tropics! 😉

Thrilling Adventures: Experiencing Costa Rica’s Wild Side
For us, no vacation is complete without incorporating some form of adventurous excursion that allows us to truly connect with the country and its vibrant spirit. Since this was Mike’s first time in Costa Rica, we opted for an action-packed day designed to showcase the incredible diversity of experiences available beyond the beaches. It was an exhilarating whirlwind that included several unforgettable activities:
- Horseback Riding near a Volcano: Galloping through lush, verdant landscapes with the majestic backdrop of a distant volcano was an incredible way to start our adventure. It offered stunning panoramic views and a wonderful sense of freedom as we explored the natural beauty of the area.
- River Tubing with Rapids: We then embraced the thrill of navigating a winding river. We lazily floated down some serene sections, taking in the scenery, and then expertly maneuvered through exciting, bubbly rapids – a perfect blend of relaxation and adrenaline that had us laughing all the way.
- Ziplining through the Canopy: Our ziplining experience was hands down the best I’ve ever encountered on any trip. Soaring high through the rainforest canopy provided a breathtaking bird’s-eye perspective of Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity, making us feel like we were truly flying amidst the trees. The lines were long, fast, and offered unparalleled views.
- Rappelling Down a Waterfall: This was perhaps the most challenging yet profoundly rewarding part of the day. Descending a sheer rock face alongside a powerful, rushing waterfall was both terrifying and utterly awesome. It was a true test of courage, rewarded with an exhilarating sense of accomplishment and an unforgettable connection to nature’s raw power.
- Volcanic Mud Bath and Hot Springs: We concluded our jam-packed day with a well-deserved, utterly therapeutic treat: indulging in a natural volcanic mud bath followed by soaking in soothing hot springs. The mineral-rich mud left our skin feeling incredibly soft, and the warm waters provided the perfect way to unwind and rejuvenate after an adrenaline-fueled day of exploration.
It was an exhausting but incredibly fulfilling day, offering Mike an ideal introduction to the adventurous spirit and natural wonders that define Costa Rica. It was truly the perfect way to share some authentic “Costa Rican fun” with him and create lasting memories.

The Magic of Tamarindo Sunsets: A Daily Ritual

If you’ve followed my travels on Instagram, you’re likely well aware of my unwavering obsession with sunsets. There’s something inherently magical and profoundly calming about watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky with an ever-changing palette of colors. While Mike might playfully claim that after ten pictures, all sunsets begin to look the same, I respectfully beg to differ. Each sunset in Tamarindo felt unique, a new masterpiece unveiled nightly, with subtle variations in color, cloud formations, and the mood it evoked. The way the light played on the waves, the silhouettes of surfers, and the gentle sounds of the ocean created a truly mesmerizing experience every single time.
Every evening of our trip was dedicated to this cherished ritual. We would find a comfortable spot on the beach, a cold drink in hand, and simply watch the magnificent spectacle unfold. It was our idea of a perfect night – a moment of shared tranquility, immersed in the raw, unadulterated beauty of nature. The vibrant oranges, fiery reds, deep purples, and soft pinks that stretched across the vast Pacific canvas were truly unforgettable, imprinting themselves in our memories as highlights of the trip.

Tamarindo’s Foodie Delights: Fresh, Flavorful, and Fun
As an enthusiastic foodie, indulging in Tamarindo’s delicious cuisine was an absolute priority. The emphasis on fresh, local ingredients – particularly seafood and tropical fruits – truly shines through in every dish, reflecting Costa Rica’s rich agricultural bounty. One particular culinary highlight was the Mango Fish Lettuce Wraps – incredibly light, remarkably fresh, and bursting with vibrant, tangy-sweet flavors. They were the perfect refreshing meal for a warm, tropical day, combining healthy ingredients with irresistible taste.

And of course, no tropical vacation is complete without an array of refreshing beverages. The fruity drinks in Tamarindo were plentiful, expertly crafted, and delightfully easy to enjoy – from classic piña coladas to unique local concoctions, they were the perfect accompaniment to the warm weather and laid-back atmosphere. Each sip tasted like paradise. 😉

Smoothie bars were ubiquitous in the local cafes and beachfront eateries, offering a diverse selection of fruit-filled concoctions. On a scorching 100-degree day, these chilled, nutrient-packed smoothies were an absolute lifesaver, hitting just the right spot and providing a delicious energy boost that kept us refreshed and ready for more adventure.

The Importance of a Couples’ Getaway: Nurturing Your Relationship
Beyond the stunning landscapes, thrilling adventures, and delicious food, one profound lesson I took away from this trip was the invaluable importance of Mike and I getting away alone. If you have children and haven’t had a vacation alone with your significant other in a while, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Even if it’s just for a few days, the investment in time and money away from the kids is absolutely worth it for the profound positive impact it has on your relationship.
In the daily juggle of work, parenting, household chores, and myriad other commitments, it’s all too easy for our individual lives and our shared relationship to become consumed by routine and responsibility. Taking time for ourselves and for our relationships isn’t selfish; it’s essential for long-term well-being and happiness. I firmly believe that we become better parents, more attentive partners, and happier individuals when we pause to breathe, reconnect with each other, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. These moments of solitude, shared experience, and renewed intimacy are crucial for finding balance, rekindling the spark, and reinforcing the foundational bond that can sometimes get buried under the relentless demands of everyday life.

Pura Vida and Farewell: Until We Meet Again, Costa Rica
By the end of our enriching five-day escapade, while my heart was full of cherished memories and renewed energy, I was also eagerly anticipating returning home to snuggle my kids. It was, without a doubt, the perfect trip – a harmonious blend of adventure, relaxation, reconnection, and culinary delights, leaving us both refreshed and revitalized.
I hope this glimpse into our journey has conveyed even a fraction of the immense beauty and unique charm that is Costa Rica. From the playful monkeys swinging through the trees, to the mesmerizing stretches of pristine beaches, the incredibly fresh and flavorful cuisine, and the genuinely warm, welcoming spirit of its people – Costa Rica truly is one of a kind. It’s a country that leaves an indelible mark on your soul, whispering the sweet promise of Pura Vida long after you’ve departed, inviting you to embrace its philosophy in your daily life and dream of your next return.
